Oakland's police chief on Friday defended officers involved in a clash with anti-Wall Street protesters, saying they used what they believed to be the least amount of force possible to protect themselves.

Power outage affects customers in Placer, El Dorado counties

Approximately 12,000 Pacific Gas and Electric Co. customers in Placer and El Dorado counties were without power as of 10 p.m. because of at transmission outage that affected five substations. As of 10:20 p.m., power had been restored to all but 3,600 customers, primarily in Cool and Pilot Hill in El Dorado County. Power was expected to be restored by 10:45 p.m., said Jana Morris, PG&E spokeswoman.
