Sacramento council members line up behind strong-mayor measure

The campaign to strengthen the authority of the Sacramento mayor’s office picked up key political support Tuesday with the announcement that four current members of the Sacramento City Council and a council member set to take office later this year are supporting Measure L.

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson’s push for Measure L, which would put significantly more power in the mayor’s office, received support today from several key leaders.

Steve Hansen continues to be a voice of dissent toward Measure L, a position with little support from the rest of the City Council.

City Council member Angelique Ashby said Tuesday that an empowered mayor would not mean the City Council would be weak.

A second Dallas hospital worker who provided care for the first Ebola patient diagnosed in the U.S. has tested positive for the disease, pointing to lapses beyond how one individual may have donned and removed personal protective garb.

An attempted crackdown on minimum wage and child labor violations at berry farms in the Pacific Northwest has sparked a backlash that threatens one of the U.S. Labor Department’s most potent tools for enforcing protections for farm workers.

Like her sister, Librada Monjaraz Vasquez, 13, is a licensed worker harvesting blueberries at Forest Hills Farms in Hillsboro, Oregon. By law, she and other children 12 and older are allowed to work 10 hours a day, six days a week. Workers under age 16, when paid by the volume that they pick, can legally receive less than the minimum wage.
