An attempted crackdown on minimum wage and child labor violations at berry farms in the Pacific Northwest has sparked a backlash that threatens one of the U.S. Labor Department’s most potent tools for enforcing protections for farm workers.

Like her sister, Librada Monjaraz Vasquez, 13, is a licensed worker harvesting blueberries at Forest Hills Farms in Hillsboro, Oregon. By law, she and other children 12 and older are allowed to work 10 hours a day, six days a week. Workers under age 16, when paid by the volume that they pick, can legally receive less than the minimum wage.

A central California man who authorities say confessed to stabbing his elderly father and mother, his two sons and the family dog has been charged with murder and animal cruelty.
